Introduction

Helen Yoest is an amazing person. She started out in engineering and even traveled the world to study pollution before deciding she wanted to make a difference by helping others grow their own plants. Since then, Helen has been working hard as Executive Director at AmericanHort while also writing books about gardening and lecturing on different topics related to horticulture!

Helen Yoest is an entrepreneur who founded Raleigh, NC-based Bee Better Naturally. It uses scientific research to help homeowners create eco-friendly gardens in their own neighborhoods. Now she’s focused on helping communities become more bee friendly and sustainable.

Many are now familiar with the name “Helen Yoest”, but what makes her unique is that she loves sharing her knowledge. She spreads her love of gardening through books and speaking engagements-she even has a website! We can’t forget how willing she was to learn about something new when it came time to work on “Bee Better” which meant researching bees for two years before writing the book. Her willingness ultimately gave us one more reason why we admire this woman so much

Bee Better Naturally and Sustainability

If you’re wondering what’s all the fuss about sustainability, I’ve got some info for you. But first, a definition: Sustainability is more than just a buzz-word but can still be hard to define. In gardening practices it means being good stewards of the earth and conserving natural resources while not adding anything that doesn’t belong there in the first place – which pretty much sums up exactly what Bee Better Naturally does! So join them if this topic interests you because no matter how big or small your garden is or where it may be located (they have members from around everywhere), everyone has something unique they bring with their own personal experiences and knowledge which make each conversation special.

Conservation of Water

As it turns out, water is a very limited resource. We care about plants more than anything and so we plan gardens to be smart about this precious natural resource by installing rain barrels at our downspouts as well as using sprinklers early in the day when the weather is cooler. In addition, adding a layer of mulch will help moderate soil temperatures and reduce evaporation too!

Leaves as a Resource

The best thing to do after the fall is not rake your leaves. The nutrients in them are great for soil, lizards and bugs love it too! Leaves also make a nice place for birds to look around in. If you must get rid of your leaves though, try finding an out-of-the way spot where they can pile up instead – that’s what we call ‘leaf composting,’ but really it just helps fertilize sustainably.

I remember a project I once head about in the Loess Plateau in China where they replanted an area the larger than Maryland. Can you believe it? It was an amazing, huge project and in 15 years they managed to turn a completely degraded area back into a beautiful landscape. This shows how important natural vegetation is and how immensely it can change the local food production. People in that area used to be poor and hungry, now they have so much naturally grown food they can sell the excess and live in comfort. It was a great success and demonstrates that wild growth matters. If some mushrooms rot in your garden, let them rot! It’s good for the soil! Everything is a resource, even fallen leaves. They are a natural part of the environment and in a forest, no one would think to pick them up, after all.
